while driving up victoria road this morning through peak hour traffic with no license plates on, i noticed i was being followed by a late-ish model fancy looking Falcon. i then noticed it had too many aerials, the wheels of something designed to move quickly, and someone who just screamed “cop” driving it. so i keep driving normally, i see him talking into a phone or possibly radio, and then turned into a side street to go home to ryde police station.
i keep driving, thinking “fuck that was weird”. i get just past all those car dealerships near top ryde, across the road from St. Charles, when i see in my mirror something you don’t see everyday, police motorbikes screaming through peak hour traffic, cutting in and out of lanes, between cars etc.
i knew instantly why they were there, and where they were headed, and sure enough, they pulled in behind me, started flashing their lights, made their little “whoop whoop” noise, and pointed for me to pull into the next street, which was coincidentally about a block from where i was headed…
we all stop, one bike in front of me, one behind me, like i’m some delegate or something in a motorcade. one cop walks up to me, and the conversation then went like this:
“son, are you aware you are driving without license plates on?”
“uh yeah… i’m just going to get my car inspected so i can get it registered”
“where are you headed?”
*hands cop google maps page*
“i’ve been calling around, and this is the only place that had a chance for me to do it today, its on monash road”
“you can’t just drive around looking for places to get this done, that’s driving an unregistered vehicle”
“i said calling, not driving”
“so if we call this place, you have a booking there?”
“mum called them, and the guy said we could just bring the car in any time today”
“you just told me you had a booking”
“no i didn’t, he just said to show up any time”
this must be getting boring to read…
cutting the rest of the conversation out:
“ok, were going to take all of your details, and if we find out you didn’t get the car inspected today, you’re going to be receiving tickets in the mail for driving an unregistered vehicle, for driving an uninsured vehicle and not having number plates correctly displayed. we’re going to follow this up to make sure you aren’t lying”
so then they left, and all was fine. ![]()
the car passed inspection! the guy was mad nice about it too.
